FRF - FORMULA RENAULT 2.0 FINLAND

The currently most prominent single-seater class in Europe, Formula Renault 2.0, arrives in Finland for the 2008 season. Approximately 800 cars compete in the Formula Renault 2.0 category all over Europe. The most well know national series are run in France, Italy, UK, Belgium, Spain and now also in Finland. In addition to that, these cars compete also in the prestigious EuroCup and Northern European Cup (NEC) series.

Three of the drivers in the coaching programme of the Finnish Automobile Sport Federation, AKK-Motorsport, are currently competing in FR 2.0 in Europe. Mika Mäki drives in the EuroCup and in the Italian Championship series. Valtteri Bottas and Joonas Kostiainen compete in the Northern European Cup. GP2-driver and one of the AKK-Motorsport coaching programme drivers, Markus Niemelä, also begun this season in FR 2.0. And it was in that class that former members of the coaching programme Heikki Kovalainen and Kimi Räikkönen both advanced their careers in. Räikkönen made the jump from Formula Renault 2.0 straight into Formula One.

AKK-Motorsport and Renault Sport Germany have struck a deal that enables a fully fledged series to start up in Finland. Renault Sport Germany has for years run the successful Northern European Cup, of which Formula Renault 2.0 Finland (FRF) will now become a part of. In the 2008 season the Finnish series will include six rounds that will be driven as one of the categories in the Finnish Championship Racing Series. One of the rounds will be the Finnish round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup*. (*TBC after the NEC calendar is confirmed)

- The purpose of launching the FR 2.0 in Finland is to offer the top young drivers, who are building their careers onwards from karting, a high-quality platform to grow "at home", says the AKK-Motorsport General Secratary Jani Backman.

- Practising, testing and competing is financially much more economical in Finland than abroad, and now we can provide equipment that is equal to what the rest of Europe are using, Backman rejoiced. Drivers can start competing in FR 2.0 at the age of 16 in their home country and abroad, according to the International Licence regulation, at the age of 17.

The national FRF regulations will be based on the NEC regulations, with small national exceptions to be published on the AKK-Motorsport website in December 2007. The Formula Renault 2.0 Finland is a comprehensive package. It includes two official test days and six competition rounds, of which one will be one of the most high-quality European rounds in this class. The Federation-owned marketing company AKK Sports Ltd provides a contact person, technical support and spare parts service in all the rounds included in the series. The FRF partner Michelin provides tyre service in the competition venues as well as transport of the test tyres freight paid to anywhere in Finland. FRF will be televised as a part of the Finnish Championship Racing Series and there will be tyre prizes awarded at each round.
